My Marathon Journey with Genetics

I've always been passionate about sports, reaching my peak in my 20s as a professional football player at the state level. Unfortunately, a severe ACL tear forced me into a long hiatus, disrupting my momentum and cutting my sporting career short.

Undeterred, I redirected my passion toward marathons, seeking solace in the rhythmic pounding of the pavement. Recently, though, I sensed a subtle decline in muscle strength and an unrelenting wave of fatigue, attributes I reluctantly attributed to the relentless march of time. Unwilling to surrender my active lifestyle, I embarked on a journey guided by the revelations of a genetic test for fitness genomics and nutrigenomics, bidding farewell to the conventional one-size-fits-all approach.

My nutrition and fitness coach explained to me the intricacies of genetic testing and reports, they had prepared me for some surprises, and we could see that in my key findings:

Key Revelations from My Genetic Test:

In My Favour:
Aerobic Capacity Trainability: Excelling in the art of endurance.
Lactate Threshold: A solid foundation for sustained effort.
Protein Response: A genetic green light for optimal protein utilisation.
Caffeine Sensitivity: Brewing up energy with a sensible touch.
Fibre Response: Embracing the benefits of a fibre-rich diet.

Challenges to Navigate:
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A red flag demanding injury prevention strategies.
Concussion: A vulnerability that required cautious consideration.
Vitamin E Metabolism: A genetic hurdle demanding attention.
Iron Metabolism: A challenge that urged an iron-rich dietary embrace.
Lactose Intolerance: A potential discomfort that steered me toward lactose-free alternatives.

Crafting a DNA-Fuelled Diet:

Unveiling my fitness portrait showcased an exceptional lactate threshold but underscored a susceptibility to injuries, prompting tailored injury prevention measures.
Capitalising on my muscle-building potential, the report recommended incorporating myofascial compression and weight training into my fitness regimen.
Recognizing heightened requirements for specific vitamins and iron, I embraced the genetic counsel to enhance my diet with iron-laden dark green vegetables.
Navigating sensitivities to salt and an elevated risk of lactose intolerance, I bid farewell to conventional dairy and welcomed lactose-free alternatives, liberating myself from the clutches of bloating.

Current Strides in My Journey:

Embracing a personalised diet and fitness plan tailored to my genotype, I witnessed the transformation of muscle mass and a surge in vitality.
The newfound strength acted as a shield, minimising the frequency of injuries during my active pursuits.
Persisting with sport-specific strength and conditioning training, I revelled in the tangible enhancements in performance, marking a holistic boost in overall well-being.

This genetic expedition, replacing the outdated norms with a bespoke roadmap, not only revitalised my athletic spirit but also underscored the undeniable truth – my genetic code holds the key to unlocking my athletic potential.
